Fellowship Patron (£10,000 a year)
Supporting and celebrating exceptional individuals who inspire and enlighten our lives
The Saltire Society has a proud history of bringing wider recognition to individuals who have excelled in their fields, in literature, arts, science, architecture, engineering, across the full scope of our intellectual interests as a nation.
The Aosdána in Ireland and National Living Treasures in Japan are examples of national approaches that combine honour, recognition and pragmatism through some form of stipend offered to exceptional individuals. The Saltire Fellowships would act in a similar manner.
We wish to honour people whose work has made an outstanding contribution to their fields, the Saltire Fellowships would aim to encourage and assist members in devoting their energies fully to their art through a stipend of £10,000 a year for three years. A capital sum of £1.5m held in the Saltire Trust would allow three individuals to be so recognised at the launch of the programme, and - another individual awarded annually thereafter the programme would begin to build an impressive group of alumni. Should the capital sum grow, as we hope, the number of fellows could be increased. There would be the possibility of that group in turn becoming involved not only in the nomination of further fellows, but as a powerful national resource to develop cultural thinking. Of course consideration could also be given to non-funded fellowships. The Saltire Fellowships would be awarded by peers and announced at the new Saltire Celebrates event held around St. Andrews Day.
