This development of 54 flats for older people replaced two former care homes on adjacent sites in the Moredun area of south Edinburgh. Arranged in two blocks, the development forms a new urban edge to the adjacent Moredun Park, opening up routes into this currently underused public space.
The dwellings themselves were designed specifically for older people and provide flexible accommodation that can adapt over time. This allows people who may develop dementia in later years to remain in their own home for as long as possible.
Flats are typically arranged in two-storey four-in-a-block units, with large communal stairs incorporating space for scooter storage and future installation of stair lifts. The flats are open plan and larger than usual to help residents who may use mobility aids.
